It had been seventeen days since I’d left the house, and I squinted around, pointing out the signs of summer, flowers in our yard, as Maia and I walked to the car, her with a hand under my elbow like it was icy. I’d called and asked Jackie to take Sasha to the playground, so for the first time, it was just the two of us. It felt funny, strangely proper, like we were on a blind date.

“Are you sure you wouldn’t rather go with Jackie? I could watch all the girls,” Maia paused as she opened the door so I could lower myself into the passenger seat.

I assured her I didn’t. The last thing I needed was Jackie letting my weigh-in number slip to the Friday group, with a ‘poor thing’ murmur and her big sheep eyes.

Maia took a long time adjusting the mirrors, her visor, squinting, first with her sunglasses up on her head, then over her eyes as she decided which was better. She mumbled how long it had been since she’d driven, narrating the route and repeating all my directions out loud. Then she fell into a jittery silence, punctuated by the turn indicator she left on for three blocks.

“So how was your weekend?” I asked, to make conversation.

“Ugh,” she answered ruefully. “Too crazy. I’m done with all that.”

Done with all what? I wondered.
